Lithium or Lead Acid Batteries: Which Is Better for Solar Backup in Kenya?

Lithium or Lead Acid Batteries: Which Is Better for Solar Backup in Kenya?

For most homes and businesses, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are the better choice for solar backup. They cost more to buy, but they last many more charge cycles, let you use more of their stored energy, charge faster and need no maintenance. Lead acid still makes sense for small budgets and systems that are rarely used.

Why do lithium batteries last longer?

Lithium iron phosphate cells handle thousands of charge and discharge cycles. Lead acid batteries wear out much sooner, especially if they are often drained deeply, which is exactly what happens during long power cuts.

What is usable capacity?

A lead acid battery should not be drained much more than halfway if it is to last. A lithium battery can be used close to its full capacity. So a smaller lithium battery can deliver the same usable energy as a larger lead acid bank.

Are lithium batteries safe?

Lithium iron phosphate is the most stable lithium chemistry and is the type used in quality home storage. It comes with a battery management system that protects it from over charging, over discharging and overheating.

When does lead acid still make sense?

For a small budget, a backup that only runs a few lights, or a system that is used only a few times a year. Sealed lead acid batteries need less care than flooded ones.

What else matters?

The battery must match the inverter, the room should be ventilated and cool, and the system should be installed with proper protection and cabling.
