Is an Electric Fence Safe for My Family and Neighbours?

Is an Electric Fence Safe for My Family and Neighbours?

A properly installed electric fence is safe. It delivers a short, sharp pulse that is painful enough to deter an intruder but is designed not to cause lasting harm. Safety comes from three things: an energiser built to the international standard, correct installation and clear warning signs.

How does an electric fence shock without causing harm?

The energiser sends a very short pulse along the wires about once a second, rather than a constant current. The pulse carries high voltage but very little energy, and the gap between pulses lets anyone who touches the fence pull away. Our energisers follow IEC 60335-2-76, the international safety standard for electric fence energisers.

What makes an installation unsafe?

Most problems come from shortcuts: home made energisers, fences connected straight to mains power, poor earthing, wires mounted too low on a wall next to a footpath, and missing warning signs. Each of these is avoidable with a professional installation.

Is an electric fence safe around children and pets?

Wall top fences are mounted above reach, which keeps children and pets away from the wires. Free standing fences around gardens or farms should be planned with family areas in mind, and the alarm tells you at once if anything touches or shorts the fence.

Do I need warning signs?

Yes. Warning signs at regular intervals and at every gate tell neighbours and passers by that the fence is live, and they add to the deterrent. We include them in every installation.

What happens during a power cut?

Our fences run from a battery charged by mains or solar, so they stay live and the alarm keeps working when the power goes off.
