Yes, a good smart lock is safe, and a flat battery will not lock you out. Quality smart locks warn you weeks before the battery runs low, and they have a backup: a mechanical key, an emergency USB power point on the outside, or both.
What happens when a smart lock battery runs low?
The lock beeps or flashes and the phone app sends a reminder, usually weeks before the battery is flat. Most locks run for many months on a set of batteries. If you ignore every warning, you can still open the door with the backup key or by powering the lock from a power bank through the emergency port.
Can a smart lock be hacked?
Locks from reputable makers encrypt the connection between the lock and your phone. The bigger risks are everyday ones: sharing a PIN too widely, never removing old users, or a weak phone password. We set up the users with you and show you how to remove access the same day someone leaves.
Does a smart lock work during a power cut?
Yes. Smart door locks run on their own batteries, not on mains power, so a power cut does not affect them. Gate and door access control systems that use mains power should have a backup battery, which we include.
Is a smart lock as strong as a normal lock?
The electronics decide who can open the door; the strength comes from the lock body, the bolt and the door itself. We fit locks with solid mortise bodies and check the door and frame before recommending one.
Who should use a smart lock?
Families who want to let in house help or visitors without copying keys, landlords who change tenants, and offices that want a record of who entered each room. See our smart lock systems and pages for Nairobi and the rest of the areas we serve.
