A reliable security guard company vets its guards, trains them, supervises them on site, can prove that patrols happened and responds quickly when something goes wrong. Ask about each of these before you sign, and ask for the answers in writing.
How are the guards vetted?
Ask whether the company checks identity, references and background before hiring, and whether it keeps records you can see. A guard has access to your gate, your family or your stock, so vetting is the first thing to get right.
What training do the guards receive?
Look for training in access control, visitor logging, patrol routines, fire safety, first aid and what to do in an emergency. Ask how often refresher training happens.
Who supervises the guards?
Supervisors should visit unannounced, day and night, and the company should give you a direct contact for complaints. A guard without supervision quickly becomes a guard asleep at the gate.
How do I know patrols happened?
Modern guard services use patrol checkpoints that the guard scans with a device, creating a time stamped record. Ask to see sample reports.
What happens in an emergency?
Ask how the guard raises the alarm, who responds, how fast, and how the company works with the police and with your alarm or CCTV.
What should the contract say?
The number of guards, the shift times, relief cover for leave and sickness, what the guard may and may not do, how incidents are reported, and the notice period.
