In most cases, yes. Solid timber, steel and aluminium doors can usually take a smart lock, often using the existing lock cut out. What decides it is the door thickness, the type of lock already fitted and the condition of the door and frame.
What do you check before fitting a smart lock?
We measure the door thickness and the backset, the distance from the door edge to the centre of the handle. We check whether the current lock is a mortise or cylinder type, whether the door opens inwards or outwards, and whether the frame is solid enough to hold the strike plate.
Which doors are hard to fit?
Very thin hollow core doors, glass doors and doors with a damaged or warped frame. Glass doors can take special locks or access control with magnetic locks instead. A damaged frame should be repaired first, because a smart lock is only as strong as the frame it locks into.
Do I need Wi-Fi for a smart lock?
No. Many locks work by fingerprint, PIN or card without any internet connection. Wi-Fi or a gateway adds remote features such as opening the door from your phone while away, live alerts and remote user management.
How long does installation take?
Fitting a single lock on a suitable door usually takes one to three hours, including adding users and showing you the app. Gates and multi door access control take longer and are planned after the survey.
